Pre-Classroom Travels

Our first few days in India were spent exploring the city, traveling to various tourist sites, and learning the basic components of the local culture. I have included some photos below from each of our adventures, along with a description of our activities for each day.

Our first day was spent exploring the city, exchanging our American money for Rupees, the Indian currency, and taking a 20 minute walk down Mahatma Gandhi Road to a local zoo, as seen in the photo above. This was our first day together as a team, so these activities provided an excellent medium for team building and getting to know each other.
During one of our morning walks in the city, we came across this Hindu temple. We were unable to enter as people that are not of the Hindu faith, but were able to observe as individuals entered the temple to pray on their way to work or school.

On New Years Eve, we got all dolled up in our traditional Indian dress and attended our hotel's New Years Party on the rooftop of the hotel. We heard music by a local band, saw a phenomenal Bollywood dance group, and took part in several small games and activities. When the clock struck midnight, we all danced and took photos before retiring to our beds, as we were still rather jet-lagged.

We spent the next two days traveling to Varkala and Kovalam Beaches, where we swam in the Arabian Sea, and experienced the art of bartering in the local shops and stores. We soaked up the sun as much as we could with our pale, middle-of-winter Iowan skin. I bought lots of souvenirs and things from these little shops, and collected some seashells to bring home as well.
